A handfull of brilliant scenes of pastiche where he totally nails Hitler. Besides that this is a badly paced movie and way way too lang. Childish naiv in all aspects.

Mästerlig skildring av en narcissistisk ledare och det är skrämmande att vi inte lär av historien utan återupprepar samma misstag gång på gång…

What is The Great Dictator about? Toggle content

The Great Dictator is a satirical comedy-drama film directed by Charlie Chaplin, released in 1940. The movie depicts a fictional country, Tomania, ruled by a ruthless dictator named Adenoid Hynkel, who has an uncanny resemblance to a humble Jewish barber. The barber, suffering from memory loss due to his service in World War I, is mistaken for Hynkel and arrested by the regime's soldiers. Commander Schultz, a former pilot who saved the barber's life during the war, recognizes him and helps him regain his memory. Meanwhile, Hynkel tries to finance his military expansion by borrowing money from a Jewish banker but ultimately orders a purge of the Jews. Schultz and the barber escape from the concentration camp and try to persuade Hannah and her family to assassinate Hynkel in a suicide attack but are dissuaded by Hannah. Troops search the ghetto and arrest Schultz and the barber again before sending them back to concentration camps where they eventually find themselves simultaneously on both sides of enemy lines inside near halfway across Europe amidst an allied invasion of Western Europe as well as up against another powerful dictator friendly neighboring nation bent exploiting their mutual Jew-hating ideals into pitting their combined forces against peace-seeking global powers resulting finally after much hilarious confusion (also involving mistaken identities with lookalikes) in each side ordering officers behind enemy lines very publicly exhorting their soldiers forthwith not only lay down arms altogether but also join hands together singing La Marseillaise joined eventually even further more seriously & spiritually along with countless thousands everywhere demanding same across entire continent at last ready likewise beginning right now boldly daring assert free will defying all oppressors loudly cry "tutti frutti!" lifted arms high... All powerfully underscored throughout its runtime with timeless gags & physical comedy set pieces -apple peels included!
