The Forgotten Battle

The Forgotten Battle is a war drama film that tells the story of three young protagonists, a British glider pilot, a Dutch Nazi soldier, and a reluctant member of the Dutch Resistance, whose lives intersect during the Battle of Walcheren in World War II. The film explores the themes of loyalty, duty, and freedom as the characters are forced to make difficult choices and confront their own moralities during the heat of battle. The film opens with Teuntje Visser working in the office of a collaborationist mayor in German-occupied Zeeland. While she and her father choose to be neutral, her younger brother Dirk is a member of the Dutch Resistance who is arrested and tortured by the Germans. Meanwhile, Marinus van Staveren, a Dutch volunteer in the Waffen-SS Division Das Reich, is reassigned to serve as secretary and translator for the German commandant in Zeeland. Marinus grows increasingly disillusioned with the Nazis' tactics and sympathizes with Teuntje's family as they attempt to negotiate Dirk's release. As Allied forces approach from Belgium, Teuntje learns that Dirk has been covertly photographing German artillery positions along the Scheldt river. She steals a tidal map showing a safe crossing point for Allied forces and smuggles it along with Dirk's photographs to British soldiers crash-landed nearby after their Airspeed Horsa glider was hit by anti-aircraft fire during Operation Market Garden. Glider Pilot Regiment Sergeant Will Sinclair joins Canadian forces advancing on Walcheren Island while Teuntje is captured by Germans before being rescued during an Allied assault led by Sinclair that liberates Walcheren Island but costs Marinus his life while deserting German forces following his disillusionment with Nazism ideology following witnessing atrocities committed against innocent civilians including hostages executed behind frontline lines or refugees drowned at sea when refugee ships sunk due torpedo attacks or minefields laid out intentionally between both shores Trailing mines also killed many incoming supplies sent via parachute drops onto occupied territory making survival even more difficult than already imagined under ruthless oppression suffered since 1940 until Allies arrived five years later!
