In 1934, a Spanish chess champion, Diego Padilla, falls in love with a French journalist, Marianne Latour, and wins the Spanish Championship of Chess. There, he must rely on his passion for chess to survive in a hostile environment, under the watchful eye of Colonel Maier, a chess enthusiast himself. As Diego struggles to stay alive, he must confront the loss of everything he holds dear and the moral decay that has consumed the world around him.
