Stomp the Yard

Stomp the Yard is a 2007 American dance drama film directed by Sylvain White and written by Robert Adetuyi. The movie follows the story of Darnell James "DJ" Williams (played by Columbus Short), a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles who enrolls at Truth University in Atlanta to avoid juvenile hall after his involvement in a shooting. DJ learns about the stepping tradition and culture in the historically black college and joins a fraternity, Theta Nu Theta, to participate in the annual step show competition against his rival Grant (played by Darrin Henson) and Mu Gamma Xi fraternity. The movie features an ensemble cast including Meagan Good as April Palmer, DJ's love interest and Dr. Palmer's daughter; Ne-Yo as Rich Brown, DJ's roommate; Harry J. Lennix as Nathan Williams, DJ's uncle, and Dr. Palmer's adversary; and Valarie Pettiford as Dr. Pamela Palmer, April's mother, and the university's president. Stomp the Yard explores themes of brotherhood, family, love, self-discovery, and the importance of cultural heritage through the lens of dance and music. The film features energetic and vibrant dance performances that showcase the unique style of stepping that has been a part of African American culture for centuries.
