Lanzmann's use of repetition and circularity may strike some as manipulative, but it makes organisational sense and reaffirms the necessary warning that humanity has the awful habit of making the same mistakes over again.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shoah about? Toggle content

Shoah is a groundbreaking documentary that delves into the traumatic events of the Holocaust, providing a profound and unforgettable experience for viewers. Director Claude Lanzmann spent 12 years researching and filming this opus, conducting extensive interviews with survivors, eyewitnesses, and even former Nazi officials. The film offers a comprehensive and intimate portrait of the systematic annihilation of six million Jews during World War II, with a focus on the Treblinka extermination camp. Shoah's unique approach to storytelling abolishes the distance between past and present, letting the viewer feel the raw emotions and horrors of the Holocaust. Without relying on archival footage or sensational imagery, the film's raw and unvarnished storytelling allows the audience to confront the harsh realities of the "Final Solution." This powerful work of memory is both a tribute to the victims and a warning to future generations, reminding us that the roots of hatred and violence are still present in our society today.
