In medieval Japan, a compassionate governor is banished by a feudal lord, leaving behind his wife and children. The family is separated and the children are sold into slavery. The son, Zushiō, grows up to become a brutal overseer, while the daughter, Anju, holds onto their father's teachings of mercy. When Anju discovers their mother may still be alive, she convinces Zushiō to escape and find her, but their journey is filled with danger and sacrifice.
