Returning to Reims (Fragments) tells the intimate and political story of the French working class from the 1950s to the present day, through the lens of a personal journey. The film follows theo protagonist as he returns to his hometown after many years away, and his mother shares her experiences of poverty, hardship, and the struggles of working-class life. Through a sophisticated blend of real and fictional archival footage, news clips, and film excerpts, the film grows into a broader political history of the French working class, culminating in an analysis of how the extreme right-wing party, Front National, has been able to gain support from working-class voters through its anti-immigrant rhetoric. Based on Didier Eribon's autobiographical book, Returning to Reims, this documentary offers a powerful and timely exploration of class, politics, and identity.
