Maylis De Kerangal’s source novel has been a huge seller in Europe, but Quillévéré has ingested and processed the material in such a visually-driven way that its literary origins are barely noticeable.

Quillévéré favours uncluttered empathy over sentimentality. Her film-making is as clinical and precise as a scalpel incision, but it’s also peppered with moments of lyricism.

We may have seen this all before, but not in this particular way. Every moment is treated with care. Nothing is manipulated to "up" the emotional response in the audience. It's not necessary.
