What is Red River about? Toggle content

Red River is a classic Western film directed by Howard Hawks, released in 1948. The movie follows the story of Thomas Dunson, a cattle rancher who adopts an orphaned boy named Matthew Garth and raises him as his own. Fourteen years later, Dunson decides to drive his massive herd hundreds of miles north to the railhead at Sedalia, Missouri, where he believes they will fetch a good price. Along the way, they encounter many troubles, and Dunson's tyrannical leadership style begins to affect the men. Matt rebels and takes control of the herd, leading them along the Chisholm Trail to the hoped-for railhead in Abilene. The drive turns toward Abilene, leaving Dunson behind, and the two men vow to kill each other when they next meet. The movie stars John Wayne as Dunson and Montgomery Clift as Matt, and features a memorable showdown between the two leads.
