In a neglected Glasgow neighborhood, a young boy named James struggles to come to terms with a tragic accident and a household plagued by poverty, violence, and filth. As trash piles up and rats scavenge for food, James finds solace in a makeshift world of his own along a nearby canal. There, he befriends a vulnerable girl named Margaret Anne, who shares his desire for escape and companionship. Together, they create a fragile bond that provides temporary respite from their harsh surroundings. Meanwhile, James' father, George, is embroiled in a garbage collectors' strike that has left the city in a state of disarray. As tensions mount and the military intervenes, James grapples with haunting guilt over a friend's drowning death and his powerlessness to change his circumstances. Will James and Margaret Anne find a way to transcend their bleak reality and build a better future?
