What is Pride about?
Pride is a 2014 British comedy-drama film directed by Matthew Warchus and written by Stephen Beresford. The movie is based on a true story and follows a group of gay and lesbian activists who raise money to support the families of striking miners in Wales during the summer of 1984. The film stars Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, and Paddy Considine. The movie begins with Mark Ashton, a young gay activist who decides to collect donations for the miners during the Gay Pride Parade in London. He founds "Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners" (LGSM) and recruits other members, including Jonathon and Gethin, an older gay couple who own a bookshop called Gay's The Word. LGSM faces opposition from both the mining community and within the gay community who feel that the miners have mistreated them in the past. Despite this, they decide to take their donations directly to a small mining village named Onllwyn in Wales. Dai Donovan, spokesperson for the miners in Onllwyn comes to London to meet their new allies where they form an unlikely alliance between two seemingly disparate communities united by their desire for justice against oppressive forces such as police harassment or exploitation at work places respectively representing sexual minorities (LGBTQ+) rights/issues on one hand & labor rights/issues on another - all while learning valuable lessons about each other's struggles along way!
