What is Die Päpstin about? Toggle content

In the 9th century, a young woman named Johanna is born in Ingelheim, Germany. She is the daughter of a strict village priest who forbids her from pursuing an education. However, Johanna is determined to learn and secretly studies the Bible, eventually impressing a visiting teacher with her knowledge. Against her father's wishes, she is allowed to attend the cathedral school in Dorestad, where she excels in her studies and attracts the attention of Count Gerold, who takes her under his wing. As she grows older, Johanna and Gerold develop feelings for each other, but their love is complicated by the fact that Johanna is disguising herself as a man in order to pursue her dreams. When Gerold goes off to war, Johanna's true identity is discovered, leading to a series of dramatic events that threaten to tear them apart. Can their love survive the challenges they face, or will societal expectations and religious dogma keep them apart?
