I was completely on board for the first half! The way they depicted the effects of isolation and his descent into madness was incredibly well executed. Unfortunately, the second half lost me, the pacing slowed, the story lost focus, and I simply grew bored.

One of the greatest behind-bars movies ever, the result finds director Franklin J. Schaffner making the most of both his sun-drenched locations and his leading man, who squintily acts even co-star Dustin Hoffman well off the screen.

...Dustin Hoffman (as a fretful counterfeiter who's taken under Papillon's wing) produces a splendid depiction of cunning corruption that acts as a perfect balance to McQueen's superstar charisma.

Tom Cruise & Christian Bale.
