"Open Heart" is a powerful documentary that follows the journeys of eight Rwandan children as they embark on a life-or-death quest for high-risk heart surgery in Sudan. Born with a treatable disease that has left their hearts ravaged, they have only months left to live. The film intertwines the stories of Dr. Emmanuel, Rwanda's lone government cardiologist fighting to save the lives of his young patients, and Dr. Gino, the head surgeon at the Salam Center, who is fighting to save his hospital, the only link to life-saving free cardiac surgery for millions of Africans in need.
