Frequently asked questions

What is Evil about? Toggle content

Evil follows the story of 15-year-old Erik Ponti, who is expelled from his state school for being "vicious" and sent to an affluent boarding school, Stjärnsberg, by his mother in an attempt to provide him with a fresh start. However, the boarding school's student council exercises a sadistic rule over the students, physically and psychologically tormenting those who disobey them. Despite his efforts to abide by their rules, Erik becomes the target of bullying when he refuses to demean himself. He befriends his roommate Pierre and begins a romantic relationship with Marja, a cafeteria staff member. When Erik joins the swimming team and wins a match against the school champion, he becomes even more of a target for the student council's wrath. As tensions rise and violence escalates at Stjärnsberg, Erik must decide whether to fight back or accept his fate as "evil." The film explores themes of violence and oppression in Swedish society during the 1950s through its portrayal of recognizable characters caught up in vicious cycles they cannot escape unless they stand up for themselves against their oppressors.
