Once Were Warriors

Once Were Warriors is a powerful and thought-provoking drama that explores the lives of a Maori family living in Auckland, New Zealand. The film centers around the themes of poverty, alcoholism, domestic violence, and the struggle to maintain cultural identity in the face of societal pressures. The story follows Beth Heke, a strong-willed and determined mother who is fiercely protective of her five children, as she tries to keep her family together despite the challenges they face. Her husband Jake, a violent and alcoholic man who is struggling with his own demons, often brings chaos and destruction into their lives. The film also focuses on Nig, the eldest son who becomes involved with a local gang as he tries to find his place in the world. Mark "Boogie" Heke is placed in foster care due to his parents' home life; however Mr Bennett helps him embrace his Maori culture which leads him to reconnect with his family later on in life when they come back together again at an tangihanga (Maori funeral). Grace another one of Jake's daughters documented events that occurred throughout this time period through her journal entries while dreaming big about being independent from an early age; sadly though Uncle Bully takes advantage sexually assaults Grace leading up until she ultimately takes her own life.. This tragedy leaves everyone torn apart especially since because Jake selfishly deals with it by going off alone drinking whereas Beth stands up for herself confronts Bully herself after reading about what happened from Graces diary . The rest if history where Beth decides enough is enough decides take back control over not just hers but also Mavis' Life (her daughter) too! In order restore balance within themselves they begin attending traditional Māori ceremonies which brings them closer together rather than drifting further apart like before so maybe there’s still hope left here yet!
