The movie begins with Sheriff John Biebe and his wife Donna discussing an article in Sports Illustrated about their town and its passion for hockey. The article praises the team's skating abilities but also criticizes John's speed. When he is dropped from the team in favor of teenager Stevie Weeks, he congratulates Stevie but is soon called away to deal with Connor Banks' arrest for shooting a representative from Price World who was arguing with him. Enter Charlie Danner, the author of Sports Illustrated article, who brings news of an exhibition game between the New York Rangers and Mystery's local team. At a town meeting, Birdie expresses his desire to play, and the game receives overwhelming support. However when John is asked to coach, he claims he doesn't know how much to Connor’s trial, Bailey Pruit asks the victim, Mr Walsh what he thinks of Mystery which prompts the jury delivers “Not Guilty” verdict amidst jubilation Judge Burnes angrily reprimands the assembly for exalting the hockey game above what is right. Birdie confronts Judge Burnes in his chambers, saying he feels that his father is being unfair.
