What is Mr. Pip about? Toggle content

Set during the civil war in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, Mr. Pip tells the story of a young girl named Matilda who finds solace in the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, read to her by the only white man in the village, Mr. Watts. When the Redskins, an army sent to destroy the local rebels, suspect Pip to be a rebel leader and demand he be brought before them, Matilda's world becomes dangerous and unpredictable. As the war rages on and the Redskins continue to terrorize the village, Mr. Watts makes a sacrificial gesture to protect Matilda and the other villagers. The film explores the power of fiction and its ability to offer escape and hope, even in the face of violence and turmoil.
