Frequently asked questions
What is Certified Copy about?
A middle-aged British writer, James Miller (William Shimell), is in Tuscany to promote his latest book "Certified Copy," which argues that authenticity is irrelevant in art, and every reproduction is an original. He meets a French antiques dealer (Juliette Binoche) who attended his talk and has her son get his book signed. They later go on an aimless drive together, discussing the premise of his book and the relationship between authenticity and simplicity. At a café, the owner mistakes Miller for the woman's husband, and they play along, beginning to behave as if they are a married couple. They continue their walk through the city, encountering an older couple and discussing their interpretations of a nearby statue. They have a fight and Miller leaves the restaurant, waiting for her outside. They pass by a church, and she goes in without him, later insisting she was only taking off her bra. They follow two elderly churchgoers home, where they are invited in for a drink. The evening becomes increasingly surreal as they struggle to distinguish between reality and fiction, original and copy.
