Baumbach can be a marvelous, unsparing reporter on a certain slice of upper-middle-class to wealthy America, and he brings that skill to bear here in the scenes of Tracy feeling out of her element.

...the pace...speeds up – and finally we’re riding a wave of zane, with crowds of subsidiary characters cheerfully welcomed on to the screen and given entertaining and amusing things to say and do.

Few filmmakers are as good on characters trying to find their place in the world and, in Baumbach’s hands, the result is smart, funny and breathless.

What is Mistress America about? Toggle content

Mistress America is a 2015 American comedy-drama film directed by Noah Baumbach. The movie follows the story of Tracy Fishko (Lola Kirke), a college freshman at Barnard College who is struggling to adjust to life in New York City. She feels disconnected from the exciting university experience and the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she had imagined. One day, Tracy meets Brooke (Greta Gerwig), her soon-to-be stepsister, who takes her under her wing and introduces her to a world of adventure and excitement. Brooke is a resident of Times Square and a free spirit who lives life on her own terms. She takes Tracy on a wild ride through the city, introducing her to new experiences and people. As Tracy becomes more and more enthralled with Brooke's lifestyle, she begins to question her own values and goals. She must decide whether to continue on her current path or take a risk and follow her heart. Along the way, she also discovers that Brooke has her own set of problems and struggles, and that their relationship is not as straightforward as it seems. The film explores themes of identity, family, friendship, love, and the pursuit of one's dreams. It is a funny and poignant portrayal of young adulthood in the big city, and the struggles that come with trying to find one's place in the world.
