Slack Bay

In the summer of 1910, a string of bizarre disappearances takes place on the scenic beaches of Slack Bay, near Calais, France. Two inept detectives, Machin and Malfoy (played by Fabrice Luchini and Juliette Binoche), are tasked with solving the mystery. As they delve deeper into the case, they discover that the vanishing acts are linked to a peculiar love story between Ma Loute, the son of a local fishing family, and Billie Van Peteghem, the daughter of a wealthy bourgeois family from Lille. The investigation becomes increasingly absurd as the inspectors confront their own prejudices and biases, while the Bruforts and the Van Peteghems, two families with very different backgrounds and values, become embroiled in a series of absurd events. In this outlandish and grotesque tale, Bruno Dumont, the acclaimed French director, explores themes of class struggle, incest, cannibalism - all set against the backdrop of a small seaside town in the early 20th century.
