John Winger, a laid-back cab driver in New York City, has a terrible day when he loses his job, apartment, car, and girlfriend all in one day. His friend Russell Ziskey, a vocational ESL teacher, joins him in enlisting in the Army to turn their lives around. They meet their drill sergeant, Sergeant Hulka, and fellow recruits at the training camp. John's slacker attitude gets on Hulka's nerves, while Russell becomes romantically involved with MPs Louise Cooper and Stella Hansen.

During basic training, John and Russell get into trouble and are punished with KP duty. One night, they sneak out of the base and visit a mud wrestling bar, where John persuades Ox, a fellow recruit, to compete with a group of women. When MPs and police raid the club, Stella and Louise help John and Russell escape. The rest of the platoon is returned to base, where their commanding officer, Captain Stillman reprimands them and threatens to make them repeat basic training.

John motivates his disheartened platoon with a speech and leads them in an unorthodox but highly coordinated drill display for their graduation ceremony. Impressed by their performance, General Barnicke assigns them to a secret project in Italy. Once there, they're reunited with a recovered Hulkaand tasked with guarding the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle.. John and  Russell steal it to visit Stella & Louise who are stationed in West Germany . When Stillman finds the vehicle missing , he launches an unauthorized mission to retrieve it against Hulka's objections which leads to them crossing into Czechoslovakia . Hulka jumps from their truck and sends out radio distress before the Soviet Army captures it. Realizing that their platoon is in danger, John, Russell, Stella & Louise take the EM-50 & infiltrate the Soviet base where the platoon is being held rescuing them with aid from hulka .
Upon returning to America, they are hailed as heroes and are each awarded distinguished Service Cross . Hulka retires ...
