Lemon Tree

Lemon Tree is a powerful and thought-provoking film that tells the story of a Palestinian widow named Salma who lives in a small village on the West Bank. When the Israeli defense minister and his wife move in next door, Salma's lemon grove becomes a symbol of resistance and hope in the face of oppression. The Israeli Secret Service demands that the trees be removed, claiming they pose a security risk, but Salma refuses to give in. With the help of a young lawyer, Ziad Daud, Salma takes her case all the way to the Supreme Court, sparking a media frenzy and drawing attention to the injustices faced by Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. As Salma struggles to protect her livelihood and her sense of self, she finds unexpected support from Mira Navon, the wife of the defense minister. Despite their differences in status and background, Mira and Salma form a deep bond, united by their shared sense of loneliness and frustration with the patriarchal society they live in. The film is a powerful allegory for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting issues of land ownership, security, and human rights. Through the lens of Salma's personal story, director Eran Riklis and screenwriter Suha Arraf shed light on broader themes such as oppression; resistance; identity; justice; empathy; solidarity; hope; resilience; determination perseverance and nonviolent activism for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. In doing so they invite viewers to reflect on their own roles in creating positive change in the world around them just as other films such as paradise now did before it.
