Their carefree existence is disrupted when the beautiful and ailing seamstress Mimì appears on their doorstep. Rodolfo and Mimì are immediately drawn to each other, but their passionate love is threatened by Mimì's terminal illness and Rodolfo's jealousy. Meanwhile, Musetta, a charming and flighty courtesan, returns to Marcello's arms, only to leave him again for greener pastures.
