Rose Island

In 1968, engineer Giorgio Rosa decided to take matters into his own hands and build his own island nation, 'The Isle of Roses', off the coast of Italy. This independent state was established outside territorial waters to avoid paying taxes and to create a place where people could truly be free. With the help of his friend Maurizio, they successfully built the island using innovative engineering solutions and welcomed their first resident, a cast-away welder. The island quickly gained popularity as a tourist destination and became known for its freedom and unique culture. However, the Italian government did not recognize Rose Island as a sovereign state and threatened its existence. Despite this opposition, Giorgio refused to relinquish control and even received support from Gabriella, an ex-girlfriend who had previously been skeptical of the project. In the end, Rose Island was unfortunately destroyed by the Italian navy but it's legacy lives on as a landmark event in history that inspired changes in international waters territory laws.
