A Hologram for the King is a movie about a struggling American businessman named Alan Clay who is sent to Saudi Arabia by his company to sell a holographic teleconferencing system project to the Saudi government for a lot of money. He is also trying to recover from a financially messy divorce and the layoff of hundreds of employees. While there, he meets with some Saudi locals and starts to develop feelings for a Saudi doctor named Zahra. However, his attempts to do business with the Saudis are thwarted by Middle Eastern bureaucracy and a perpetually absent monarch, and he also becomes suspicious of a growth on his back that he gets checked out at a local hospital. Ultimately, it is implied that the Saudi government had always intended to do business with the Chinese instead of him, and he returns home after the presentation is given.
