Frequently asked questions

What is Julieta about? Toggle content

Julieta, a teacher in her fifties, lives in Madrid with her boyfriend Lorenzo. One day, she meets Bea, her daughter Antía's childhood friend, who tells her that Antía is living in Switzerland with three children. Julieta is overwhelmed with desire to reconnect with Antía and decides to stay in Madrid, renting an apartment in the same building where she raised Antía. As she awaits word from her daughter, Julieta fills a journal with memories of her life as a mother, spouse, and daughter. The film flashes back to Julieta's meeting with Xoan, Antía's father, on a train, and their subsequent relationship. After Xoan's death, Julieta storms out and walks alone, and Xoan goes fishing despite the bad weather. His boat capsizes, and he is killed. Ava, a friend of Xoan's whom Julieta had seen as a rival, helps scatter his ashes at sea. Instead of joining Ava for the cremation, Julieta goes to Madrid, where she rents an apartment nearby, hoping for her daughter to visit.
