In 1725, Japan, a samurai named Isaburo Sasahara (Toshiro Mifune) is faced with a difficult decision when his lord orders his son to marry the lord's ex-concubine, Ichi (Yoko Tsukasa), who is also the mother of one of the lord's sons. Despite their initial reluctance, Ichi and Yogoro (Go Kato) fall in love and have a daughter together. However, when the lord's primary heir dies and he orders Ichi to return to care for their son and heir, the family refuses to let her go, and Isaburo must choose between loyalty to his lord and protecting his family.
