In the shadow of World War II, a once-proud shipyard worker struggles to find his place in a world that seems to have left him behind. Spurned by his wife for a younger man and feeling emasculated, Joe finds himself at a crossroads. In a bid to regain his sense of purpose, he and his friend Harry join the Home Guard, but their bumbling efforts only seem to dent their dignity further. As they stumble from one misadventure to the next, Joe is faced with the ultimate question: can he find a way to prove his worth in a war that doesn't seem to want him?
