Independencia

Set in the early 20th century, Independencia follows a mother and son who flee to the mountains to escape the arrival of American forces in the Philippines. They settle in an abandoned hut, trying to create a new life away from civilization. One day, the son finds a wounded woman, a victim of an American soldier's assault, and brings her home. As they care for her, the mother's health declines and she eventually dies. The woman gives birth to a child, and their makeshift family continues to live in the jungle. However, their peace is short-lived as American soldiers discover their presence, leading to a tragic turn of events. The film's narrative is interspersed with a newsreel depicting an American soldier's brutal act, emphasizing the oppression that the Filipino people faced during this time period. Through the use of striking imagery and symbolism, Independencia poignantly captures the struggle for survival and the loss of innocence in a world torn apart by war and violence.
