In the Footsteps of Elephant" follows a film crew as they capture the epic journey of African elephants through the Kalahari Desert for Disneynature's "Elephant". The team faces extreme weather conditions, inaccessible terrain, and dangerous wildlife, including crocodiles and lions, to showcase these remarkable creatures and their legendary migrations. Filming the largest land animal in the world is no easy task, and the team must first transport their equipment and personnel 1600 kilometers to the heart of the Okavango Delta, where the elephants gather annually. Their next challenge is finding the elephants, which is like finding a needle in a haystack amidst a vast area of over 6,000 square kilometers. Luckily, the filmmakers receive help from a local biologist who tracks elephant populations. They identify a herd and are ready to roll... quite literally. A family of elephants can travel up to 50 kilometers per day in their quest for paradise, and the filmmakers cannot keep up. However, adversity breeds opportunity, and they mount a stabilized camera, normally used for aerial footage, onto their truck, discovering a completely new way to tell their story. The cinematographers are eager to capture a migration that has never been documented before, but filming in the African desert comes with its own unique set of risks. They encounter crocodiles while boating in the delta, witness lions hunting impalas in the middle of their camp, and film a confrontation between lions and a mother elephant protecting her child from the safety of their truck. Despite the risks , the rewards far outweigh them. The filmmakers recall their favorite moments, such as an exhilarating battle between a young elephant calf and some lechwes (a type of antelope), a heartwarming scene of a family mourning an elephant that has passed away, or a jaw-dropping moment when a baby elephant takes its first steps. After a year of shooting, they have fallen in love with the elephants and their unique, quirky personalities . As they return to where their journey began, they wait patiently but anxiously for th e elephants to return home, hoping to catch a glimpse again of their fascinating and heartwarming adventures .
