What is The Bad Poet about? Toggle content

In 1936, a young federal governor named Giovanni Comini is tasked with spying on the famous poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, who is suspected of speaking out against Mussolini's alliance with Hitler. Comini becomes a regular visitor to d'Annunzio's estate, where he becomes fascinated by the poet's work and eventually forms a close bond with him. However, when d'Annunzio asks Comini to arrange a meeting with Mussolini to dissuade him from his intentions, Comini is unable to fulfill his request. As d'Annunzio's mental and physical health begins to decline, he reveals to Comini that opposing the war is his duty and that he will try again when he goes to Rome to accept the post of President of the Academy. However, upon his return, Comini is severely reprimanded for highlighting popular impatience with the alliance between Hitler and Mussolini. A year later, d'Annunzio dies in unclear circumstances, and Comini is demoted for his opposition to the alliance.
