The Round Up

The Round Up (2010) is a powerful and poignant film that recounts the true story of the 1942 Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, a tragic event in which 13,000 Jews were arrested and deported to concentration camps during World War II. The film follows the story of Joseph, a young Jewish boy who lives in Paris with his family, and their struggles to survive during this dark period in history. The film takes place in the Butte Montmartre district, where Joseph and his family attempt to live a normal life despite the Nazi occupation. However, their fate takes a devastating turn when they are arrested and taken to the Vélodrome d'Hiver, a sports stadium that has been converted into a detention center. Conditions are harsh, with little food, water, or sanitation, and the prisoners are subjected to psychological and physical abuse. Despite the bleak circumstances, there are moments of hope and kindness. Annette Monod, a nurse who works at the velodrome, does her best to help Joseph and other Jews while Captain Pierret of the Paris firefighters uses his rank to impose silence on dissatisfied gendarmes. When the prisoners are eventually deported to a transit camp in Beaune-la-Rolande things only get worse, with inadequate food and unbearable living conditions leading to illness and despair but Joseph manages along with some others to escape, while Annette continues to care for the remaining children and tries to ensure their survival after the war ends at the Lutetia hotel, a Parisian hotel that welcomed survivors of camps where they eventually found each other again.
