In the strict rural community of the Black Forest, two young lovers from different worlds,s Peter and Lisbeth, struggle to be together. Peter, a poor coal worker, yearns to provide a better life for Lisbeth, who hails from a wealthy family of glassblowers. In desperation, Peter makes a Faustian bargain with Dutch Michael, a diabolical figure who replaces his heart with a stone, freeing him from empathy.
