In the grandest tradition of them all, Ridley Scott, together with man of the moment Russell Crowe, has enriched the legacy of sandals, swords and leather wrist thingees to create a magnificent epic.

Maximus, a well-respected Roman general, becomes the target of Commodus, the corrupt son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, after he is chosen to succeed the emperor. When Commodus murders his father and takes the throne, Maximus is sentenced to death and his family is killed.
