Maximus, a well-respected Roman general, becomes the target of Commodus, the corrupt son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, after he is chosen to succeed the emperor. When Commodus murders his father and takes the throne, Maximus is sentenced to death and his family is killed. He escapes and is captured by slave traders, who rename him Spaniard and force him to become a gladiator.
