In feudal Japan, a young woman named Chizuru Yukimura searches for her missing father in the dangerous city of Kyoto. She witnesses a brutal murder by a group of mysterious, demon-like warriors known as the Shinsengumi, who are supposed to be the shogunate's secret police and peacekeepers. Taken captive, Chizuru finds herself caught up in the Shinsengumi's battles and secrets, including their quest to uncover the truth behind the legendary "Water of Life" and the powerful, supernatural beings known as Onis.
