Farewell

Farewell is a gripping espionage thriller set during the final years of the Cold War. The movie follows the story of Sergei Grigoriev (played by Emir Kusturica), a high-ranking KGB analyst who becomes disillusioned with the Soviet regime and decides to pass sensitive information to the French government. Grigoriev uses Pierre Froment (played by Guillaume Canet), a naive French engineer based in Moscow, as his unlikely intermediary. As Grigoriev's prodigious output of classified information blossoms, the French are bewildered by the sheer scale and yield of top Western technology transferred covertly to the Soviets. The information is so valuable that President Mitterrand personally hands a dossier of Farewell's data to President Reagan during the Ottawa G7 summit. The Americans are astounded by the information and launch an ambitious plan to feed the Soviets erroneous or defective data, leading to the roll-up of the Soviet technology spies in the West and Reagan's announcement of the "Star Wars" antimissile shield project. Meanwhile, Grigoriev's superior, a double agent for the CIA, is directed to sacrifice Grigoriev and save the Froments. Grigoriev is arrested and interrogated by the KGB, but he plays dumb to give the Froments time to escape. They flee by car to the Finnish border, where they are debriefed by the CIA. However, Pierre pleads with the CIA Director to save Grigoriev, praising his integrity and selflessness. The director refuses as a policy principle, having brought the other agent to safety. Grigoriev is granted his request of execution by a marksman on the jetty of the snow-clad lake he loves before the Froments flee back to America.
