Pauline on tyttö, joka on melko omituinen tapaus ulkonäöltään ja mielenlaadultaan ja josta ei kukaan pidä, ei edes oma äitikään, joka on varsinainen nipottaja ja määräilee diktaattorin tavoin perhettään. Mutta Pauline haaveilee lääketieteellisestä urasta, josta hän näkee jotensakin outoja verenpunaisia unia. Koulu vaan ei oikein kiinnosta. Ainoa joka Paulinesta todella välittää, on hänen pikkusiskonsa, joka kuitenkin on vakavasti sairas. Pauline haluaisi auttaa sisartaan ja lukee kaiken mahdollisen hänen sairaudestaan.
