What is A Single Man about? Toggle content

"A Single Man" is a poignant and visually stunning film that follows George Falconer, a middle-aged English professor, as he struggles to cope with the sudden loss of his longtime partner, Jim. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, the film takes place over the course of one day, as George goes about his routine, reminiscing about his past with Jim, and contemplating suicide. Along the way, he forms connections with a Spanish male prostitute and a curious student, but it's not until he meets Kenny, a young man who has followed him to a bar, that George begins to rediscover his ability to feel and connect with others. As he finds peace with his grief, George suffers a heart attack and dies, envisioning Jim appearing and kissing him. The film is an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's novella of the same name.
