Tras la muerte inesperada de su marido, una joven mujer intenta rehacer la vida junto a su hija. Sin embargo, apenas se muda a su nueva casa, la niña pierde la vida en la piscina. La protagonista, en el intento de salvarla, sufre un accidente y queda inconsciente en el hospital durante un tiempo. Cuando vuelve en sí, se entera de que ha quedado sorda y, cuando intenta regresar a su vida cotidiana, descubre que es capaz de oír fragmentos de conversaciones de gente que ya ha muerto.
