Dolls is a movie that consists of three distinct stories, each with its own unique visual style, yet all centered around a single theme: the transience of life and the power of love. In the first story, a young couple is forced to confront the harsh realities of societal expectations when their plans for a happy life together are shattered by family obligations. The second tale follows a former yakuza member who returns to a park where he used to meet his long-lost love, only to find her still waiting for him. The third story revolves around a pop star who becomes the object of obsession for a devoted fan, leading him to make a drastic sacrifice in the name of love. Throughout these stories, the film explores the idea that love can be both beautiful and cruel, often transcending the bounds of time and circumstance. Emulating the traditional Japanese Bunraku puppet theatre, Dolls delves into themes of mortality and the fleeting nature of human connection while also showcasing the director's unique visual style and symbolism.
