Distant Lights

In the shadow of the river Oder, which separates Germany and Poland, lives are intersecting in unexpected ways. A Ukrainian man, Kolya, is smuggled into Germany, only to find himself on the wrong side of the border. Ingo, a struggling German salesman, finds love in Simone, but struggles to make a living. Antoni, a Polish taxi driver, is desperate to buy his daughter a communion dress, while Philip, a young architect, reconnects with his former girlfriend Beata. Meanwhile, Anna and Dimitri risk everything to cross the river, and Andreas, a young orphan who smuggles cigarettes tries to escape his difficult life. Set against the backdrop of the European border, Distant Lights weaves together these disparate stories, highlighting both the desperation and hope that defines life on this complex frontier.
