In the year 689, Wu Zetian, the future empress of China, faces opposition from Tang officials. When a series of mysterious deaths threaten to delay her coronation, she turns to Di Renjie, a former detective and rebel imprisoned for eight years. Di, along with his team, must solve the mystery behind the tragic deaths and uncover the truth behind the fire beetle venom used by assassins. With the help of Shangguan Jing'er, Wu Zetian's maid and right-hand woman skilled martial artist, and Pei Donglai an albino officer devoted to his duty, Di embarks on a dangerous adventure filled with deceit and betrayal.
