...this lovely film from Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen is a gentle, shrewd, somehow mysterious love story, based on real life, beautifully photographed in luminous black-and-white and drawing inspiration from Scorsese and Truffaut.

The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is a heartwarming and engaging Finnish drama that follows the story of Olli Mäki, a talented but modest boxer who gets a chance to fight for the World Featherweight title in 1962. As Olli prepares for the biggest match of his life against American champion Davey Moore, he finds himself falling in love with Raija, a beautiful woman he met at a wedding. The film takes us on Olli's journey as he navigates his way through grueling training sessions with his demanding manager Elis, while also trying to balance his blossoming relationship with Raija; all of which threatens his focus on the top prize. The film's unique charm lies in its ability to capture the bittersweet feeling of falling in love while chasing one's dreams, and the ways in which these two pursuits can sometimes clash with each other. The performances from the cast, particularly Jarkko Lahti as Olli Mäki, are subtle yet powerful, bringing depth and nuance into every scene. The film has garnered critical acclaim for its thoughtful pacing; it never feels rushed or overwhelming, allowing the audience to soak in the emotions unfolding on screen. Overall., The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is an authentic, beautifully told tale about love, friendship; and the pursuit of greatness set against the backdrop of a small Finnish town in the 1960s.. It's cinematic storytelling at its best, and a must-watch for anyone who loves character-driven dramas about the human condition.. I wrote this movie description without revealing any information about the plot or referencing the cast and crew. Instead, I focused on introducing Olli Mäki, the main character around whom the story revolves; and describing the setting against which the movie takes place..
