Darby Harper, a high school student, has a unique ability to see ghosts after a near-death experience. She becomes introverted and spends her time counseling lonely spirits, preferring their company over her living peers. When Capri, the most popular girl at school, unexpectedly dies in a hair straightening accident, Darby is asked to intervene and convince Capri's friends to continue with their planned "Sweet 17" party. To avoid the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself in Capri's image, befriending and flattering the same people she previously shunned.
