What is Censor about? Toggle content

In 1985, Enid Baines works for the British Board of Film Classification during the height of the Video Nasty controversy. Enid's co-workers call her "Little Miss Perfect" due to her insistence that violent content be cut or banned because of the impact it would have on the audience. Shortly after a man murders his wife and children, Enid starts receiving threatening phone calls on a regular basis after a tabloid newspaper links the killings to a film Enid had rated several months prior while naming her as the censor who approved it - the same film producer Doug Smart used as inspiration for his new film Don't Go in the Church. Enid notices that the film depicts events similar to her memories of her sister Nina's disappearance - a memory that has haunted her since childhood since her parents have since declared Nina legally dead. Enid soon becomes obsessed with meeting veteran horror director Frederick North since the film's lead, Alice Lee bears an uncanny resemblance to Nina - an obsession that eventually leads to Enid visiting Smart hoping to learn North's whereabouts. There, Smart attempts to rape Enid before she kills him in self-defense and flees to North's home where she finds the set of his latest film. Assumed to be an actress, Enid kills an actor named Charles with an axe before a terrified Alice flees from Enid as she begs for Alice (whom she mistakenly addresses as "sister") before collapsing in exhaustion in the woods. When Enid awakens from unconsciousness, she finds herself in a fantasy world where Nina is alive and happy. Her fantasy is briefly interrupted by reality when it is implied that instead of finding Nina, Enid has in fact kidnapped Alice but eventually, the film ends with what seems to be Enid living in happiness with Nina while the camera pans out to reveal that it was all just a movie that someone was watching all along.
