Some will find it overly long, but with such a pivotal performance by Cruise and a veritable platoon of Hollywood elite supporting, who can begrudge a bit more screen time?

What is Born on the Fourth of July about? Toggle content

Born on the Fourth of July is a powerful and thought-provoking film that tells the story of Ron Kovic, a young man who enlists in the Marines during the Vietnam War, only to return home paralyzed from the waist down. The movie follows Kovic's journey from his teenage years to his time in Vietnam, where he witnesses horrific atrocities and is injured, to his return home and his struggles to cope with his disillusionment and depression . The film is directed by Oliver Stone, and features a star-studded cast, including Tom Cruise as Kovic, and Dale Dye, Abbie Hoffman and Edie Brickell in supporting roles. The movie is based on Kovic's autobiography, and it pulls no punches in its portrayal of the harsh realities of war and its effects on the soldiers who fight in it. Kovic's experiences, from the patriotic fervor that leads him to enlist to the horrors he witnesses in Vietnam to the neglect and abuse he endures upon his return home serve as a powerful indictment of the US military and government's treatment of its veterans . The film's cinematography is raw and gritty capturing the intensity of combat and the bleakness of Kovic's existence after his injury. The score is equally haunting, with a mix of patriotic anthems and somber, mournful melodies that perfectly capture mood . Born on the Fourth of July was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 1989, earning eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Cruise's searing performance as Kovic . It remains a powerful and emotional experience for audiences today, serving as both a tribute to those who have served in the military and a warning about the dangers of blind patriotism..
