Whimsical without being twee, freewheeling without being messy, moving without being schmaltzy, Big Fish aligns Burton's visual virtuosity and offbeat sensibility to a story that, for once, has more than one foot in the real world.

What is Big Fish about? Toggle content

Big Fish is a movie about a son, William Bloom, who tries to understand his dying father, Edward Bloom's, complex life by piecing together stories from his past. Despite having heard fantastical tales from his father all his life, Will had grown apart from him and doesn't believe they are true. When Edward is diagnosed with cancer, Will and his wife Joséphine spend time with him in their childhood home in Alabama, and through flashbacks, we see Edward's adventures unfold. From meeting a witch who shows him his own death to traveling with a misunderstood giant named Karl as part of a circus act called "The Unusual Suspects," we see how Edward grew restless in Ashton and followed bigger dreams. In the endWill realizes that though the stories may not be entirely factual they contain deeper truths about Edward's character and personality
