Frequently asked questions
What is Beowulf about?
Beowulf is a 2007 motion capture film directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the Old English epic poem of the same name. The film stars Ray Winstone as the titular character, a Scandinavian warrior who comes to the aid of King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) and battles the monstrous Grendel (Crispin Glover) and later its mother (Angelina Jolie). The film was produced using performance capture technology, which allows actors to wear special suits that capture their movements and expressions. The technology was previously used in Zemeckis' film "The Polar Express." The film's cast also includes John Malkovich, Robin Wright, and Brendan Gleeson. Ray Winstone, who had not read the original poem before being cast in the role, enjoyed working with motion-capture technology and found it to be a unique experience. He also played a dwarf performer in the film. Winstone's animated counterpart bears little resemblance to him as he looks in real life, but he has stated that he enjoyed this experience because it allowed him to carry a scene on and keep his energy levels up.
