Bedevilled

A young professional woman named Hae-won returns to her childhood home on a remote island after witnessing a violent murder in the city and getting fired from her job. She finds that her former friend Bok-nam is being treated as a slave by the island's inhabitants, who subject her to daily beatings, sexual abuse, and hard labor. Despite Bok-nam's pleas for help, Hae-won is too afraid to get involved and ignores her friend's plight. As the days pass, Hae-won becomes more and more uncomfortable with the island's oppressive atmosphere and the constant abuse that Bok-nam faces. She starts to hallucinate and becomes paranoid, fearing that the islanders might turn their violence against her. One day, Bok-nam's daughter Yeon-hee is killed while trying to defend her mother against Man-jong, Bok-nam's abusive husband. Bok-nam snaps and goes on a killing spree, murdering several of the island's meanest women and eventually killing Man-jong and his brother. Hae-won, who has been watching the events unfold, finally snaps out of her apathy and tries to stop Bok-nam, but it's too late. Bok-nam has become consumed by her rage and grief, and she continues her rampage until she is killed by the island's men. The film ends with Hae-won, who has witnessed the entire tragic event, escaping the island in a boat, leaving behind the horrors she experienced and the friends she failed to save. The movie raises important questions about the effects of trauma, the dangers of apathy, and the importance of standing up against oppression and violence.
